These summer months have had me working hard! Some days it feels like the continuos light glow of the computer screen will become permanently imprinted on my brain, allowing me to see nothing but that. Okay, perhaps that’s a tiny bit dramatic….nevertheless, I’ve been finding myself needing a break from work to enjoy the summer are and spend time with my family more. My oldest is growing fast, and will be headed to preschool next year. Since it isn’t often that we get to do things together without Dad and Baby, I decided to take her on a Mommy Daughter date, just the two of us.
If you read my previous blog about “The Wizard Of OZ”, you know that I’ve partnered with Starlight Theatre here in Kansas City, MO this summer to review their many fabulous Broadway shows. “We Will Rock You” was hitting the stage, and I knew that would be the perfect opportunity for a Mommy/Daughter date. I wasn’t disappointed.
“We Will Rock You” is a musical by Queen and Ben Elton. With an upbeat mix of current rock, old rock, and sprinkles of pop songs (and references) in between, this was the absolute perfect show for all ages. Like always, the crowd at Starlight was friendly, and felt comfortable. The show was designed to draw the crowd in, and keep us at the edge of our seats. It succeeded in doing just that! I was actually pretty amazed that my 5 year old was able to stay focused the entire 2 1/2 hour show (as well as stay awake to rave about it the entire car ride home)!
I watched the faces in the crowd, both young and old, as they lit up with recognition of their favorite songs. There was also plenty of good natured adult humour that went right over the kids heads (the best kind of adult humour). The main characters traveled throughout the show, attempting to “bring back the music” to a planet droned down by technology that they have lost touch with the benefits of good, old fashioned live music. I chuckled at the parts where they were complexed by this mysterious box, also known as a VCR and the VHS tape that accompanied it. My daughter had absolutely NO clue what it was! I think i’m getting old!
Tomorrow Starlight will be featured Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Steamboat. I’ll be taking the whole family along this time, and hope to see you there! If not, stay tuned for my review and I’ll tell you all about it!
