At the very top of my list was being sure that I had any and everything baby might need ready for her when she arrived. She had her very own room that was jam packed with baby gadgets, complete with a fully stocked walk-in closet of ensembles.
Fast forward to a year later and most of the clothes went unworn because the seasons changed or she outgrew them before we even had the chance to pull off the tags. Most of the diapers I’d stocked up on had to be exchanged for larger sizes to match babies size. The trendy little gadgets that were supposed to make life easier more often than not became space hogs that had to be stored away so that we actually had room for baby once she began crawling and exploring.
When my second child came around, I chuckled at the memories and how green behind the ears I was. When people asked me if I needed things for baby I politely answered that larger size diapers and onesies are always appreciated, but that we didn’t really need too much else.
Now, seven years later, I’m a mother of three and chuckle to myself when I see new parents stressing and obsessing on all the new “must haves” for baby that weren’t even around when I was having my first. Somehow, however, we managed to survive without them… and you can too! If you’re a new parent wondering what you actually NEED for baby, you’re in luck! I’ve created a New Parent Survival guide with a few of the essentials!
The Obvious Baby Supply Checklist Items
Some of the things on the list you likely already know. You’ll need onesies, socks, footed pajamas, blankets (comfy blankets and receiving blankets both come in handy at times and burp cloths (I like buying cloth diapers to use as burp clothes because they’re super absorbent). Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle feeding it’s always a good idea to have bottles on hand. There were times when I would need to express milk and let Daddy feed the baby just so I could get a much-needed shower or nap. Playtex Nursers with Drop-In Liners are great because they not only reduce the amount of air the baby takes in (key for reducing colic), they also make clean up super simple during a time that every spare minute you get is golden. These bottles are the perfect solution for switching from bottle to breast and back again, since the nipple allows baby to mimic the same latch as when nursing. You can grab these (and everything else on your list) at Target.
Just look for the display like the one below!
Now that my youngest is 8 months old, we’ve discovered the 9 oz Playtex Ventaire bottles, because they’re so easy for her to hold! These bottles have options for all age groups and bottle sizes.
The Anti-Colic bottom vent prevents air from getting into the bottle and onto baby’s tummy, which keeps her happy and content. The semi-upright angle of this bottle is also recommended by pediatricians to prevent ear infections. After she’s done with her bottle, baby rest easy… and that makes mommy happy too!
I consider the Diaper Genie Complete an essential as well. As a new parent, there’s no time to worry about running soiled diapers back and forth to the outdoors garbage (and trust me… they’ll DEFINITELY need to be kept outdoors!). With the Diaper Genie elite, you don’t have to worry about all of that. It’s the most advanced item of the Diaper Genie system, and comes equipped with a 7-layer refill bag with double Air-Tite® CLAMP! This is also the only system that features the Ultimate Odor Lock System. It has a foot-pedal system and so there’s need to touch the pail when you toss diapers out, and a convenient front load that makes switching out bags very quick and easy.
You’ll of course need the essentials like onesies, blankets, diapers and wipes, etc. I put together a handy checklist of the main essential items you’ll need. Once you have those out the way, you can indulge in the fun of picking out cute baby accessories and frivolous items, with the peace of mind that you’ve already got the basics cover!
Besides, once baby arrives… your favorite pastime will be just watching them sleep. Their comfort, is really is the only “must have”.
