“Girl, I started a new job, got a new man, am buying a new house, rocking this new outfit, with these new brazilian bundles… life is great.”
How many of you have that one friend or relative that is ALWAYS going on and on about what they have, don’t have, should have, could have, and might have? I’m pretty sure we all do. If you don’t, you might want to take a deep look in the mirror. Chances are that person might just be you.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s wonderful to share good news. I’m a chatterbox myself, and often find myself bursting at the seams to share some exciting news I’ve received with my loved ones.
The difference between scenario A and scenario B?
The holidays are a time for family, friends, and fun. It’s a time to get together and really celebrate life, love and companionship, amongst other things. If you have something exciting to share with your family, this would ABSOLUTELY be a great time to share. If you just want to toot your own horn and try to put yourself on a higher pedestal than your loved ones, however… take your bourgeois attitude off and leave it at the door.
It’s just that simple.
All of that extra “one upping” in your pursuit to keep up with the Joneses is not only unnecessary… it’s making everyone uncomfortable. It might make some people feel bad about their situations. Others may feel the need to one-up, leaving them on the defense rather than fostering a warm and caring environment.
And then, there’s the ones who think you just look silly.
Yup, I said it. All of that extra that you think in your head looks cool, probably looks pretty similar to unintelligent banter to the wisest of your spectators.
So, just relax these holidays. Take a chill pill and enjoy your family and your friends. Be honest. Be genuine. Have fun! If you’re sharing something because you’re truly excited to share… by all means proceed! If you find yourself sharing and embellishing to one up someone or to foster your own self esteem however….
Just quit it.
