So many things changed over the years, from the time I was a child. I often look at my children, thinking of how different things are for them than they were for me. If there’s one thing I’ve noticed that hasn’t changed over the years, however, it’s the summer brain slumps!
What are the summer brain slumps?
These are what I call the phenomenon that begins to take place from the moment school lets out for the summer. The summer generally starts off upbeat and lots of fun, but no more than midway through… the complaining begins! The “I’m bored’s” start coming more and more frequently, and it becomes increasingly difficult to get your children to engage in any and all activities that may lead to brain stimulation.
I’ve tried combating the summer brain slumps a number of different ways. Educational outings and worksheets kept them engaged for the moment, but it was quite evident their effort was forced. I changed my dynamic, and instead focused on helping my children learn… without them realizing they were learning! To do this, I enlisted the help of LEGO® Classic.
From the moment my daughter opened the package of her LEGO Classic, her customary look of boredom was wiped away… replaced with a look of awe!
It’s as if I could already see the wheels in her brain turning, considering what amazing adventure she’d create with them. That’s the thing I love most about LEGO. They help you develop your child’s creative skills. The bright, colorful, and versatile LEGO Bricks make it easy for children to imagine. The wide variety of special pieces provides your child with all of the tools they need to discover their creative building skills.
They can create everything from houses, animals, vehicles and so much more! The opportunities are endless! LEGO Bricks span such a wide range of age groups, that there’s guaranteed to be something fun for everyone in the family!
LEGO Classic is made up of ten sets provide a “no instructions necessary” experience! Ranging from $16.99 – $50, there’s a LEGO Classic set to fit just about any budget. Check here for more inspiration.
When she first began, I could tell my daughter was overwhelmed by all of the pieces. It’s as if she didn’t know where to start!
I used a Lego pro tip from LEGO Master Builders and Upright Citizens Brigade Experts ( a world renowned improve group that has partnered with LEGO in an effort to help families get their creative juices flowing) to help her get going.
LEGO Pro Tip
Warm up to building – This pro tip suggested that you make building a game. Set a few simple guidelines and get to work! For her, we started off building a tower that had to start and end with her favorite color. That’s it! It could be as tall and creative as she liked. She started off simple, and soon she was adding on looking for other new and fun ways to transform her tower!
Within no time she was having a blast making up her own creations to build. I watched quietly has she tackled problem-solving, questioned the name of several of the shapes, and fired her her brain from its summer slump…allowing creativity to take hold of her!
Is your child suffering from the summer brain slumps? I encourage you to watch the Upright Citizens Brigade video over on YouTube HERE. Before you know it, you and your child will both be aspiring to build the world you once only imagined!
