This week, C is for Courage. Besides action, this word might be the single most important factor of achieving your career aspirations. Changing your mindset to go after your dreams takes a great amount of courage. Whether it’s the courage to finally quit that job that’s been holding you back like my friend Ericka did (read her story here), or to make the monetary investment needed to get your business going, you’ve got to be brave to get the ball rolling.
Easier said than done in today’s society. Unfortunately, someone fresh out of college and still wet behind the ears probably has more going for them when it comes to the mindset needed to start a business. In college you’re encouraged to be creative and think outside the box. You’re taught to challenge the status quo, and use your own mind to question and analyze. What happens after you graduate though? All of your creative efforts are no longer as valuable when you enter the workforce. You are taught to conform, rather than create. While your company might value your ideas and input, they are quick to take them and make them their own. You are no longer furnishing your dreams, but instead you are watching your thoughts and ideas become the property of someone else’s dynasty.
Be brave. Don’t be afraid to learn. You’re going to make mistakes along the way. That’s alright. You’re going to change your mind about things all the time, that’s called growth. People are going to talk about you, let them. Chances are their lack of positivity stems from jealous. Most of us wish to pursue our dreams, but get stuck somewhere in a comfort zone that leaves us settling for less than what we initially desired. If i’ve learned one thing when it comes to pursing your dreams it’s that if you’re uncomfortable, you’re on the right track!
